Todd Heap Has Known Ja'kobi Lane Since Day One

The Ravens added upside at wide receiver in the draft, but this isn’t a player who came out of nowhere. Ja'kobi Lane has been building toward this moment for years, and few people have a better perspective on that than Todd Heap.

During his appearance on The Lounge podcast, Heap shared just how far back their connection goes.

“Ja'kobi is a great kid. I mean, he's just a fun, young, fun-loving guy. I've known him since he's about 13 years old. And he's been making plays since long before then. I mean, he's a young guy that came in, and you see his talent right away. And so it was fun to watch him. You know, going up through. You know, even before high school. And then his freshman year, got to watch him. And then through his sophomore to senior year, got to coach him a little bit.”

That early exposure that Heap had to Lane's skill set—and his personality—helped shape the confidence Baltimore now has in its new receiver. Lane's blend of size, athleticism, and playmaking ability aligns with the Ravens' goal of adding physical targets to their passing attack.

For Lane, the draft selection represents the culmination of years of work and belief by those who saw his potential early on. For the Ravens, it's another example of trusting relationships and deep scouting connections to identify players who fit both the system and the culture.
