PEORIA — Illinois saw a second player go into the NCAA football transfer portal on Thursday, this time from the defensive side of the ball.

Reserve defensive back Tyler Strain, who has one season of eligibility remaining, entered the portal. He appeared in seven games last season and made five tackles. For his career, he played 35 games and had 57 tackles, three interceptions and nine passes defensed.

Strain came into the Fighting Illini program in 2021 under Lovie Smith. He was a 3-star recruit ranked No. 114 at his position by ESPN.

The 5-foot-9 defender missed spring practices while recovering from shoulder surgery.
