It’s tough to know exactly what you’re going to get from this year’s Tennessee Volunteers, but it’s easy to be excited about the future. Tennessee, particularly offensively, is loaded for years to come at a few key positions. A couple of those building blocks are starting to feel like they’ll be day one impact players.
The future is led by 5-star quarterback Faizon Brandon, who is battling to win the starting job in camp with George MacIntyre. Perhaps his main target over the next three to four seasons will end up being fellow 5-star prospect TK Keys, who is also battling for a starting role in the Tennessee offense.
Meeting with the media for the first time this week, Keys was all smiles about his potential quarterback.
“Faizon is phenomenal,” Keys said. “I mean, he got so big, so much faster. He moves like a train. At that size, it’s crazy. He’s been ripping the ball. He’s been hitting the road running, doing his thing.”
Brandon now checks in at 6-4, 225 pounds. Keys, the 6-2, 200 pounder, has spent plenty of time building chemistry with Brandon over the last several months.
“I mean he always had a great spin, but I feel like now — I feel like the other day I caught the ball without no gloves on, bunch of balls from him in the warm-up, and like… you can hear the ball sizzling,” TK Keys said on Wednesday. “It’s kind of crazy how he does it. He’s great at what he does.”
Brandon, if he wins the job, will be operating behind a veteran offensive line and throwing to several veterans in addition to Keys. Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley return, along with tight end Ethan Davis. DeSean Bishop is coming back off of a 1,000 yard season. Whoever, Brandon or MacIntyre, wins the job, they’ll have plenty to work with and will be place in an environment to win immediately.
For now thought, it’s Brandon that seems to have all the momentum in the battle. Tennessee fans hoping for a glimpse of the future back in the spring are now realizing that that future might just be now.
