Minnesota added to its point guard depth as the free agency opening ball rang Tuesday evening, re-signing Bones Hyland to a one-year, minimum contract, a source confirmed to the Pioneer Press.
“Minny I’m back let’s do it,” Hyland tweeted.
The 25-year-old guard averaged 8.5 points in 16.6 minutes per game last season while shooting 39% from beyond the arc. He pushed pace and helped generate offense off the bench.
While Hyland struggled to find his footing in the playoffs, and still has to prove he’s capable of delivering at that stage — which certainly suppressed his value this summer — he is a proven regular season contributor.
That could carry a lot of value for a Minnesota team that entered free agency thin at the point guard position. The Timberwolves’ floor general is LaMelo Ball, who has past injury concerns. Behind him was no one other than Ayo Dosunmu, who could start in a potential small-ball lineup for Minnesota.
Hyland gives Minnesota a legitimate option for backup point guard minutes behind Ball and a scoring punch off the pine that could be lacking with Naz Reid now in Charlotte.
Whether Hyland is the only reserve point guard on the roster remains to be seen. As of Tuesday evening, Mike Conley remained unsigned. It’s believed Minnesota would like the veteran back, but that Conley has multiple suitors.
