PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland Timbers dropped 3-1 in their final game before the FIFA World Cup break on Saturday night at Providence Park.
San Jose started off strong and never looked back, they scored three goals in the first 24 minutes of the game. Portland was only able to find the back of the net one time, despite several opportunities. Goalie James Pantemis had four saves for the Timbers.
“Tonight was a reflection of the first 14 games. The foundation of life is to compete, and if you don’t compete you can’t win anything,” shared head coach Phil Neville following the loss. “If we can’t put the ball in the back of the net with the chances we’ve got then we’ve got to work even harder.”
This is the first time that Portland has lost at home to San Jose since joining the MLS in 2011. Neville also added how their main goal was to control the pace of the game and that didn’t happen in the first half.
“They wanted to make the first half chaos and we got drawn it. San Jose is a brilliant example of doing the things that really matter to win games of football. We’ve not done those things. They had three shots in the first half and three goals. Every guy that got the ball wanted to be the World Cup winner. I felt there was too much emotion, too much chaos.”
San Jose now has 32 points only one behind MLS-leading Nashville. Around the 85th minute of the game, the Timbers army began chatting “Neville out,” but the head coach didn’t seem to be surprised by it at all.
“There’s no pity party from me. If I was in Timbers Army I’d be doing the same. I signed up for this role and that comes with it. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last time it’s happened to me. The support that we’ve had is the reason why I’m here, you respect everything they do.”
The Timbers will now be on a break until July 16th when they travel to Seattle to face the Sounders.
