Tim Legler gets real about Dylan Harper's ceiling as a star player for the Spurs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The 2025 NBA Draft class was not seen as the most talented, but it did have some phenomenal players at the top of the class. Among them is the second overall pick, Dylan Harper.
He had a stellar rookie season, but the standout performances came during the 2026 Playoffs. Not only did the San Antonio Spurs reach the NBA Finals, but Harper played a pivotal role in the run as a 20-year-old rookie.
Tim Legler projects Dylan Harper to be a star point guard
While the Spurs did lose in the Finals to the New York Knicks, Harper kept proving that he is part of the Spurs' long-term future. With Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, the Spurs look primed to have a strong team moving forward.
Harper could be one of the team's best players, especially if he is handed the spot in the starting lineup. Of course, De'Aaron Fox is still on the roster, so they will have to find ways to integrate everybody.

However, Harper has proven that he is an undeniable talent who deserves to play all the time. Former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Tim Legler believes that the sky is the limit for a player like Harper moving forward.
"He’s a future First-Team All-NBA player. Which, if you’re talking about guys at that level, you’re talking about guys that can be the best playing on a contending team," Legler said on Green Light with Chris Long.
"Like Brunson, he was the one guy for the Spurs who was super comfortable under pressure. That moment was not too big for Dylan Harper, even at 20 years old... I think within 5 years, he’s a guy that’s going to be in the conversation for 1st team All-NBA."
That is a glowing review of Harper's ability to become a star player for the Spurs. It is hard to fault Legler for thinking that way because Harper has shown that he is ready for the moment, and he will only keep improving with time.
