The Detroit Tigers have lost an infielder for the rest of the season.

The Tigers announced that shortstop Trey Sweeney will miss the rest of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. The 26-year-old infielder has been out since spring training with a shoulder strain.

"He's on the mend, but after trying conservatively to get through this shoulder issue, surgery ended up being the only option," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said.

The Tigers acquired Sweeney along with minor league catcher Thayron Liranzo in a July 2024 trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers for starter Jack Flaherty (who returned to the Tigers as a free agent ahead of the 2025 season). That was part of a midseason sell-off that immediately preceded Detroit's historic run to the postseason, ending in a five-game loss to the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS.

Sweeney showed promise over 36 games in 2024, putting up a .642 OPS and playing above-average defense. His production regressed tremendously in 2025, however, as his batting average dipped to .196 over 326 plate appearances. He did not make the team's postseason roster in 2025 after starting in all seven playoff games in 2024.
