Detroit — The Tigers were expected to place All-Star left fielder Riley Greene on the 10-day injured list before the game, but the final decision was pending some late medical tests.
"We're still evaluating," manager AJ Hinch said at 3 p.m. Wednesday. "Clearly there is something he is dealing with but we're going to make sure we get a thorough evaluation from multiple medical professionals."
Greene came out of the game in the second inning Tuesday with right hamstring tightness, which he felt scoring from first base on a double by Spencer Torkelson.
"He said he felt it right when he got to home plate as he was slowing up," Hinch said. "Which is why you didn't see him grab. You know how guys grab at their hamstring and hobble? He never hobbled. I'm hopeful that's a very good sign, as opposed to a massive, mid-belly grab and hobble."
To cover every eventuality, the Tigers summoned veteran outfielder Corey Julks from Triple-A Toledo. If Greene has to go on the IL, Julks would be selected and a corresponding move would have to be made to clear a 40-man spot.
The right-handed hitting Julks, 30, was slashing .273/.347/.453 with an .800 OPS, 15 homers and 54 RBI at Toledo. He's played parts of three seasons in the big leagues with Houston (2023) and the White Sox (2024, 2025).
Julks and left-handed hitting James Outman could end up sharing left field if Greene has to be shut down.
"The sum of the parts is also going to be something we're proud of and we will continue to be next man up," Hinch said. "(The playing time) will be spread out, if that's what we have to do. I don't know who is going to step up and grab opportunity if it presents itself. But we're going to be open to anything."
The Tigers have put 35 players from their 40-man roster on the injured list at some point this season. Greene, until now, hadn’t been one of them. He’d played in 117 of the team’s first 119 games, hitting 16 homers with a .366 on-base percentage and .816 OPS.
It would a tough blow to lose Greene just as they've climbed within a game of .500 and 2.5 games of the division lead.
"We're going to have to absorb it, just like every other team has to absorb injuries," Hinch said. "But it's not just one player, it will have to be a collection of players."
The Tigers made one other move before the game Wednesday. Lefty reliever Enmanuel De Jesus returned off paternity leave. He and his wife welcomed a baby girl on Tuesday.
Right-hander Yilmer Diaz was optioned back to Toledo.

LHP Parker Messick (9-6, 2.57), Guardians: He’s won two of his last three starts, shutting the Tampa Rays down over 7.2 innings and limiting the White Sox to two runs over seven. He’s got an elite, 94-95 mph four-seamer (plus-28 run value) which is holding hitters to a .161 average with a 26.5% whiff rate. Lefties hit him a tick better than righties (.687 OPS vs. 585 OPS) largely because of his gnarly changeup (35.5% whiff). Righties also have to deal with his curveball and cutter. Lefties see more sinkers and sliders.
RHP Keider Montero (8-7, 3.38), Tigers: He’s coming off a ragged start in San Francisco where he walked three (two of which scored) and gave up a couple of home runs, both off secondary pitches. When he’s at his best, which has been most of the time, he’s able to dot his 95-mph four-seamer to gain leverage for his spin and changeup. Statcast gives his four-seam a plus-9 run value, which ranks in the top 95 percentile in baseball. Montero has allowed three runs in 14.1 innings against the Guardians in his career, including three scoreless innings in the 2024 Wild Card Series. But all three runs came back on May 19, when again walks and a homer did him in.
