Detroit – The Tigers didn’t waste any time filling the final open spot on their 40-man roster.
On Saturday, they claimed 26-year-old right-hander Andre Granillo off waivers from the Washington Nationals and assigned him to Triple-A Toledo.
The Tigers had an open spot after designating outfielder Jahmai Jones for assignment on Thursday.
Granillo, whose primary weapon is a slider which he throws off a 94-mph four-seam fastball, debuted with the Cardinals last season. He pitched in eight games with the Nationals this season, walking eight with three strikeouts in 9.1 innings.
He had been struggling in Triple-A, as well, posting a 6.82 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 31.2 innings at Rochester.
