The Tigers finished their West Coast trip with another win, this time needing extras to take a 3-1 victory over the Giants on Sunday at Oracle Park.
After entering extra innings tied at 1, the Tigers scored twice in the 10th inning to take the series and end their long road trip with a 7-2 record.
Pinch-hitting Hao-Yu Lee hit a single to right field that scored Riley Greene from second base for the go-ahead run. Then after Spencer Torkelson's single landed in center field to put runners on first and third, Max Clark hit a grounder to second base to score Lee.
The game was low on runs thanks to great pitching performances from Troy Melton and Logan Webb.
Melton cruised through the Giants batting order, giving up four hits and striking out five batters while only walking just one player. He retired eight straight batters before ending his start in six innings and lowering his season ERA to 1.46.
Of course, Melton got help with one of the best plays of the day, as Zach McKinstry in right field, catching a flyball in right field before throwing a frozen rope to Eduardo Valencia, tagging out Willy Adames at home to end the fourth inning.

Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb had the Tigers figured out for the first five innings, then came the sixth. McKinstry and Kevin McGonigle hit back-to-back singles, putting McGonigle at first and McKinstry at third. Gleyber Torres hit a grounder for a double play, letting McKinstry score and giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Things almost unraveled for the Tigers in the bottom of the seventh. Miscommunication in left field allowed a routine pop-out to drop for a single to Rafael Devers. Kyle Finnegan entered in relief, forcing a groundout but Detroit couldn't complete the double play.
Osleivis Basabe then stole second base, but a wild throw by Valencia gifted Basabe a free trip to third base. That led to a grounder hit by Drew Gilbert, with Colt Keith unable to corral the baseball and scoring Basabe to tie the game.
Even though he gave up that run in the sixth inning, Webb stayed on the mound to begin the eighth where Valencia made up for his seventh-inning error with a one-out double. Then with two outs, Webb managed to convince Giants manager... to stay and face McGonigle for a fourth time.
McGonigle couldn't make the fourth time around count, flying out to right field to end the top of the eighth. Into the next frame, Drew Sommers gave up back-to-back singles before striking out Jung Hoo Lee for the first out, but walked Willy Adames to load the bases.
A.J. Hinch kept Sommers on the mound, facing Rafael Devers and getting the double play to end the eighth inning. Tyler Smith entered in the ninth inning to pitch for the Giants, striking out the side.
Kenley Jansen and Tyler Horton both finished relief pitching for the Tigers, as Jansen struck out the side in the ninth while Horton struck out all three batters in the tenth to end the game.
