NEED TO KNOW

  • Tiger Woods plead not guilty to charges stemming from his March 27 crash in Florida, according to records obtained and reviewed by PEOPLE
  • The golfer will be represented by Douglas Duncan, who represented him in 2017 on a DUI charge
  • An affidavit claimed Woods was in possession of two opioid pills when he was arrested

Tiger Woods has pleaded not guilty to his DUI charge stemming from his rollover car crash.

According to court documents obtained and reviewed by PEOPLE, Woods, 50, entered the plea in Martin County Court on Tuesday, March 31. The golfer will be represented again by lawyer Douglas Duncan, who represented Woods in his 2017 DUI case.

By pleading not guilty, Woods has waived arraingment and requested a jury trial.

Woods was charged with a DUI, causing property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful urine test after the rollover crash in Jupiter Island, Florida on Friday, March 27, in which his Land Rover rolled over when he "overtook" a truck carrying a pressure-cleaning trailer, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE earlier Tuesday.

Sheriff John M. Budensiek alleged in a press conference after the accident that Woods clipped the back of the trailer, and his Land Rover rolled over onto the driver's side door, sliding down the road. Woods was able to climb out of the vehicle, but Budensiek claimed Woods appeared "lethargic" and had "signs of impairment" while speaking with officers.

Woods blew "triple zeros" on a breathalyzer test, but he allegedly refused a urinalysis, and authorities believe he was "not impaired by alcohol but possibly by medication or another substance."

Deputies with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office allegedly found two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ left pants pocket while at the scene, according to the affidavit.

Woods also allegedly told a deputy that he had looked down at his phone while changing the station on his car radio, and did not realize the truck ahead of him had slowed down, per the affidavit.

Nobody was injured as a result of the crash. Woods was taken to a hospital for evaluation before he was charged at the Martin County jail. He was released on bond the same day.

A source told PEOPLE after the crash that Woods refuses to hire a personal driver because he "doesn't want anyone to watch over him or know what he is doing...And he thinks he is fine to drive."

"He is not a social butterfly and prefers to hang around his home with his kids, or hitting balls, or playing video games," the source added. "He despises public scrutiny."

Woods was previously involved in two other car accidents. He sustained serious injuries in a 2021 crash in Los Angeles that required surgery and was also involved in a separate incident in 2009, also near his Florida residence.
