Tiger Woods was arrested and faces two misdemeanor charges after authorities say he initiated a rollover car crash Friday, March 27 near his home in Jupiter Island, Florida.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said the crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m. March 27 when a Land Rover driven by Woods swerved to avoid a turning vehicle in a 30 mph zone on South Beach Road in Jupiter Island, clipping the other vehicle and sliding along the road. Budensiek said the 50-year-old Woods was taken to Martin County Jail where he was charged with suspicion of DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a drug test.
Neither Woods nor the other driver were injured, Budensiek said. This is the second time Woods has been arrested on DUI charges in Florida and the third time he has been involved in a car crash. Woods had played competitive golf for the first time in more than a year just three days before in the TGL finals near his home, and he was working toward returning to play in the Masters in April.
Here's what we know.
Yes. According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, Woods was involved in a rollover crash near his home on Jupiter Island. Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said a pressure cleaner truck was northbound on South Beach Road turning into a driveway, and the driver saw a black Land Rover, driven by Woods, coming from behind to pass him at high speeds. He edged off side of Beach Road, and the Land Rover swerved and clipped the back end of the trailer, the sheriff said. The Land Rover slid across the road, and the driver — Woods — crawled out of the vehicle.
According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, neither Woods nor the other driver were injured in the crash. Budensiek said he wasn't sure if Woods was wearing a seat belt.
Yes. Budensiek said Woods cooperated at the scene in taking a breathalyzer test, which showed no traces of alcohol, but was careful about what he said and seemed impaired. He was taken to Martin County Jail, where he refused to take a urine test. He was arrested and charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, both misdemeanors.
Per Florida statute, Woods was required to stay 8 hours in jail before being released on bail.
No. Shortly after 11 p.m. March 27, Woods was seen exiting the Martin County Jail. He was later photographed while riding in the passenger seat of an unidentified vehicle, leaving the jail premises.
Florida House Bill 687, known as "Trenton's Law," criminalizes the first refusal of a urine test during a DUI arrest, making it a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days in jail and license suspension. The law became effective Oct. 1, 2025. The law would lead to Woods' license being suspended.
The crash happened in the 200 block of South Beach Road, on Jupiter Island, Florida. Woods' home is in the 400 block of South Beach Road; he has lived there since 2007 when he purchased the property for $44.5 million, according to Martin County property appraiser records.
Jupiter Island is a small barrier island north of Miami and Palm Beach, home to celebrities, athletes and investors. It sits between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. The crash occurred in the 200 block of South Beach Road in Jupiter Island, a stretch of land between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean near the Martin and Palm Beach county border in South Florida. Woods has lived on Jupiter Island since 2007.
This is the second time Woods has been arrested on DUI charges. On May 29, 2017, Woods was arrested for driving under the influence in Jupiter. Police found him asleep at the wheel of his damaged 2015 black Mercedes-Benz on Military Trail with the engine running.
An apparent mix of prescription drugs had Woods so disoriented he had trouble standing, slurred his words and was unable to perform roadside sobriety tests. A breathalyzer test recorded 0.000 alcohol levels, and a subsequent toxicology report revealed a combination of prescription medications and other substances.
This is Woods' third recorded car crash, including a rollover accident in Southern California five years ago in which he nearly lost his leg. Woods suffered severe, career-threatening injuries to his right leg and ankle after a single-car crash in 2021, including compound, open fractures of the tibia and fibula. The injuries required a rod insertion, along with screws and pins for foot and ankle trauma, plus a fasciotomy for swelling.
On Nov. 27, 2009, Woods was involved in a single-car accident, hitting a fire hydrant and a tree as he was leaving the driveway of his home near Orlando. His then-wife, Elin Nordegren, used a golf club to smash the rear window to free him. Woods suffered facial lacerations and was unconscious for a short period. Later he was cited for careless driving, with $3,200 in property damage.
Woods missed the entire 2025 PGA Tour season after needing surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon in March and disc-replacement surgery in his back in October. He made his return to competitive golf in the TGL finals March 24 in Palm Beach Gardens, less than 20 miles south of his home. The five-time Masters champion was hoping to return to play at Augusta in the tournament that starts April 9, but President Donald Trump seemingly broke the news that he wouldn't be able to play.
“I love Tiger, but he won’t be there," Trump said March 26 on Fox News. "Well, he’ll be there, but he won’t be playing in it."
Tiger Woods and Vanessa Trump, the former wife of Donald Trump Jr., are dating and made their relationship "Instagram official" on March 23, 2025. The pair recently shared a public kiss as Woods competed in the TGL Finals in Palm Beach Gardens.
"I feel so badly, his, uh, he's got some difficulty," Donald Trump said after landing in Miami the evening after Woods' crash. "There was an accident, and that's all I know. Very close friend of mine. An amazing person, amazing man ... but some difficulty."
