The Oklahoma City Thunder, after winning the 2025 NBA championship, looked poised to run the league for at least half a decade. However, the very next season, the San Antonio Spurs proved to be not just their equal, but perhaps their superior. The Spurs ended up knocking the Thunder out of championship contention in a hard-fought seven-game series in the Western Conference Finals, proving that their dominance that began in the regular season was no mere fluke.
The Thunder lost four times to the Spurs in the regular season and four times yet again in the playoffs. Suffice to say, OKC met its match. One could argue that OKC would have won in the playoffs had it not been for Jalen Williams’ and Ajay Mitchell’s injury problems, but Cason Wallace is not using any excuses — admitting instead that OKC lost fair and square.
“Absolutely. I feel like they’ve got the best of us. They beat us. If we just keeping it a hundred, they beat us. They beat us in the season. They beat us in the playoffs. So it’s like we got to fight back,” Wallace said, per Clemente Almanza of USA Today’s Thunder Wire.

The Thunder had to make some roster adjustments in the offseason to duck the second apron, losing Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins in the process. Nonetheless, OKC brought back all of their most important players anyway and are certainly looking to get their revenge on the Spurs for next season.
San Antonio, however, did strengthen as well. They added reliable veteran Tobias Harris, and they loaded up even more in the frontcourt to help strengthen the team behind Victor Wembanyama.

But considering how close the Thunder and Spurs’ battles were in the 2026 Western Conference Finals, there isn’t much of a margin between these two teams. It will all come down to health come May, and OKC is at least playing from a position of seeking redemption.
