The Milwaukee Bucks will be down a man after the news that guard Andre Jackson Jr., who played the last three seasons with the Bucks, is signing a training camp contract with the Toronto Raptors to compete for a roster spot for next season.
Jackson Jr. was drafted 36th-overall by the Orlando Magic in the 2023 NBA Draft after a college career at UConn that was highlighted by a NCAA championship in 2023, but he was traded on draft night from the Magic to the Bucks, where he's played the entirety of his career up to this point before entering free agency.
While Jackson Jr. didn't see much starting time last season, he was a dependable bench piece for the Bucks during his time in Milwaukee and during the 2024-25 season he saw his highest usage, starting 43 of the 67 games he appeared in while averaging 14.6 minutes per game.

In his three-year career, Jackson Jr. has averaged 2.7 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game and earned himself fan-favorite status in his time with the Bucks.
Jackson Jr.'s rookie contract expired at the end of last season and sent him into free agency, but with all of the Bucks' activity this offseason that transformed the state of the Bucks' roster, there wasn't going to be much space for the Jackson Jr. on the roster, even deep on the bench.

As the Bucks' depth chart stands, they have an abundance of guards in the backcourt between the starters in Ryan Rollins and Tyler Herro and throughout the depth chart with players like Gary Trent Jr., Kevin Porter Jr., Caris LeVert and Summer League standout Brayden Burries.
The backcourt is likely the area where the Bucks have the most depth and despite Jackson Jr.'s experience with the team, there simply wasn't space for him or a candidate that he was likely to perform better than in order to beat them out for a roster spot.

His future is not in somewhat of a state of flux considering that his contract with the Raptors is, by definition, non-guaranteed, requiring him to excel in training camp to try and earn a roster spot for the Raptors.
Changing out old players for new ones is a natural result of a rebuild for any team, as it is the result for the Bucks, and while Jackson Jr. may have filled a necessary role for the Bucks in the past, there simply wasn't a place for him anymore, leading him to Toronto.
