The Brooklyn Nets were one of several teams to make trades this offseason, landing Julius Randle on June 23, and Yahoo Sports' Adel Ahmad has crafted another blockbuster trade for Brooklyn.
Ahmad created a three-team deal with the Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets and Nets.
Brooklyn lands Jalen Duren; Houston acquires Michael Porter Jr., Ron Holland II and draft capital, and Detroit receives Kevin Durant and Clint Capela.
This multi-team move is highly unlikely because of too many moving pieces. The Nets are in the midst of extension talks with Porter, as the two sides are finding a financial compromise to continue their partnership.
Porter's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said he believes the team is a good fit for his client on SiriusXM. The 6-foot-10 sharpshooting wing had a career year, averaging 24.2 points on his highest usage percentage (30%).
General manager Sean Marks can renegotiate and extend the team's leading scorer with remaining cap space. Brooklyn can use the $4.5 million to raise Porter's salary next season and lower it in 2027-28.
He is a vital part of the organization's plan to compete next season. The new "3-2-1" lottery reform punishes the three worst teams by reducing their draft odds, and the Nets finished with the third-worst record last season (20-62).
As for Detroit, the team is at odds with its 22-year-old center. Duren, a restricted free agent, wants the maximum rookie extension (five-year, $287 million), according to multiple reports.
He is coming off a season in which he made significant improvement as an offensive player, averaging 19.5 points and making his first All-Star appearance.
Duren underperformed in the playoffs, though. He averaged 10.2 points in the postseason as the Pistons lost in the second round against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Detroit is unwilling to offer its young center what he wants, which led him to contact other teams for sign-and-trade opportunities. The organization shut that down, too, and that's where this trade falls apart at its core.
Houston's involvement is based on Durant's nature to switch teams and his relationship with Pistons superstar Cade Cunningham.
After spending nine seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 18-year veteran has not spent more than three years with a team. He requested a trade out of Brooklyn in two and a half seasons, and the Phoenix Suns acquired him in 2023.
Phoenix then traded Durant to the Rockets after two seasons last year.
ClutchPoints reporter Brett Siegel reported the 37-year-old has a strong relationship with Cunningham. It could be why Ahmad made this mock trade, including the Duren saga that has yet to be resolved.
Brooklyn should not be involved in a trade of this magnitude. Marks has an active offseason, adding five new players to the roster. Considering the extension negotiations, the team would rather keep Porter long-term rather than trade him.
