Xander Bogaerts became the hero on Tuesday night for the San Diego Padres as his bases-loaded sacrifice fly lifted the Padres past the Colorado Rockies.
This game was one where the Rockies' defense was awful. Colorado committed four errors in the game. Edouard Julien picked up one on a fielding play, Willi Castro got one for a fielding error, Jake McCarthy also had a fielding error, and Hunter Goodman was charged with an errant throw error.
These are the types of things that Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer makes notes of and, while probably not directly after the game, might speak to these players and remind them of a couple of things. Colorado remains in last place in the National League West Division, now sitting at 24 games below .500 at 42-66.
Let's take a look at three takeaways from Tuesday night's loss.
Michael Lorenzen got the start and only went four innings. He gave up nine hits, three earned runs, walked one, and struck out two. He now has a 6.54 ERA on the season. Starts like this might heat up the chatter about Lorenzen being available at the MLB Trade Deadline, which comes up on Aug, 3.
Schaeffer had to use five different pitchers after Lorenzen was pulled from the game. In the end, Jimmy Herget worked the final one-third of an inning against San Diego. He gave up Bogaerts' sacrifice fly, along with one earned run, two walks, and no strikeouts.
It wasn't the type of finish that the Rockies wanted to have at Petco Park.
Colorado's Mickey Moniak went 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and one run scored. Moniak also struck out three times and now has a .279 batting average. He hit his 17th home run on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Cole Carrigg put together a 3-for-4 night for the Rockies. Carrigg also scored one run but didn't coax a walk or record a strikeout.
Willi Castro also had a good night in the batter's box. Castro hit his 11th longball this season off of Padres starter Michael King. He went 1-for-2, scored two runs, had an RBI, walked twice, and struck out once.
This is what the Rockies need more of right now: Solid hitting and much better defense in the field. And, of course, better starting pitchers taking the mound.
After three innings, Colorado led 4-2 over San Diego but couldn't keep the lead. Once again, the Rockies, after the Padres tied the game 4-4, went up 6-4 in the top of the seventh inning.
They went ahead 7-6 in the top of the eighth inning. Then, San Diego secured an 8-7 win in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Colorado just was not able to hold a lead on Tuesday night.
Again, these are games that Schaeffer will replay in his mind a lot.
With the MLB Trade Deadline coming up, Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes have decisions to make.
This two-game series ends on Wednesday between Colorado and San Diego.
