LSU baseball faced Oklahoma with the Tigers looking for their first SEC series win of the year. The Tigers felt good about their chances on Sunday with Jay Johnson handing the ball to William Schmidt. Johnson made some lineup adjustments, too. It wasn't enough and the Tigers dropped Game 3 on Sunday with a 4-2 score and OU took two of three from LSU in Baton Rouge.

Schmidt had a solid game. He pitched four full innings and gave up only one run on six hits, seven strikeouts, and two walks. Gavin Guidry entered the game to start the fifth inning, and he was tasked with eating a lot of innings late in the game. LSU had a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning, but an infield error doomed the Tigers.

Here are three takeaways from LSU's loss.

Omar Serna Jr. is a great athlete

Omar Serna Jr. has stepped up his game lately for the Tigers. He is a team player who just wants to win. He was even willing to go from catcher to first base just to help the team in any way possible. Did I mention he can swing the bat with the best of 'em as well?

In 21 games and 12 starts, the true freshman owns a .903 OPS with three home runs. LSU's lineup is struggling right now, but if the Tigers figure it out, Serna will probably be a big part of it.

Solid start from Schmidt

William Schmidt had a good day on the mound against the Sooners. He worked around a few base runners, giving up six hits and walking two hitters, but he was able to negate the damage to only one run allowed. That lone run came on a solo homer in the top of the first inning. Other than that, he settled in and gave LSU a very solid start.

An error dooms the Tigers

LSU entered the top of the eighth inning with a 3-1 lead. The Sooners were able to score one run on Guidry to cut the lead to one. With one out in the inning, Sheerin got a ground ball to second base that should have turned into a double play to get the Tigers out of the inning with the lead, but an error from the second baseman led to everyone being safe and Oklahoma tying the game and eventually taking the lead.

Defensive fundamentals such as this have been an issue for the Tigers in 2026. LSU ranks near the bottom of the SEC in fielding percentage.
