BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Southern first-year head coach Marshall Faulk has told the media multiple times that he wants to name a starting quarterback as early as possible.
That’s a welcome change of pace for Jag fans, who have grown accustomed to not knowing who the starter is until the week or day of the season opener.

Faulk still hasn’t officially named a starting quarterback, but after the first day of fall camp, the competition appears to be narrowing.
Christian Johnson (transfer from Hutchinson Community College), Ashton Strother, and Wyatt McCaulley (transfer from Long Beach City College) were the three quarterbacks taking snaps under center. Johnson received the first-team reps, followed by Strother and McCaulley.
Strother is the only returning quarterback from last season. He appeared in nine games, totaling 1,202 all-purpose yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions.
For the other quarterbacks on the roster, Faulk says he still plans on getting them involved, just in different roles.
We should get an official announcement on who the Jags’ starting quarterback will be sometime this week.
