After a two hour rain delay, a pair of seventh inning runs were nearly enough to lift the Washington Nationals over the New York Yankees in the series opener at home on Friday night. Then three runs in the ninth inning flipped the script.
Following the 5-3 loss, the Nationals have now given up four go-ahead home runs in the ninth inning over their last 16 games.
James Wood finished a triple away from hitting for the cycle after a 3-for-5 showing in the loss.
Carson Palmquist stepped in as the opener on Friday for his third time as a National, allowing one earned run and three hits to go with four strikeouts in three innings. Zack Littell stepped in for the next four innings where he allowed five hits and a home run, his MLB-leading 23rd, before Tom Cosgrove and Clayton Beeter combined to dazzle in the eighth.
Yet Palmquist's run allowed gave the Yankees a lead just nine pitches into the game before the Nationals answered back in the third with James Wood starting it off with a double into center. Curtis Mead then put runners on the corners with a single before Dylan Crews drove in Wood, albeit it came off a double play to tie the game.
That didn't last long though after Littell's 15th solo home run allowed put the Nationals back in a one run deficit, but Washington would nearly tie it back up in the sixth.
CJ Abrams gave Washington life with a double into left before Jacob Young's single put runners on the corners, but it nearly materialized into the second run after Abrams tripped while rounding third. That mattered after Daylen Lile then Jorbit Vivas, facing his former team, struck out in consecutive at bats to end the frame.
The good news? Washington wouldn't let it slip away again in the seventh inning all within the span of four pitches.
After Luis Garcia Jr opened the frame with a groundout, Keibert Ruiz belted a 371 foot home run to left before James Wood took the first pitch, an 89 mph sinker, 419 feet to put the Nationals ahead, 3-2, for the first time on the night.
Washington threatened to add a fourth run in the bottom of the eighth after a wild throw by the Yankees catcher let Daylen Lile reach third, but a pop out from Vivas ended the scoring chance.
Matt Krook then came out for his first save opportunity as a National, which ended in a two-run shot allowed to Jazz Chisholm Jr. to put the Yankees back on top. That was enough for Butera to turn to Justin Lawrence to close the inning before also giving up a home run, this time a 387 foot solo shot that put New York ahead, 5-3. Lawrence tossed consecutive walks to follow up a single that loaded the bases, but the deficit remained two after a groundout ended the disaster inning.
