Michigan State football made a huge investment in its special teams unit this year when Pat Fitzgerald managed to steal legendary special teams coordinator LeVar Woods from Big Ten rival Iowa. We know who will be punting for MSU, as Woods brought Iowa's elite punter Rhys Dakin with him to East Lansing. The kicking battle will be between highly ranked freshman Stephen Gonzales and transfer Liam Boyd. Now, according to LeVar Woods' own comments this morning, we know the three players competing for the returner job.
Last year, kicks were handled by, primarily, a mix of Alante Brown and Elijah Tau-Tolliver, while punts were handled by Omari Kelly. According to Woods, these three players are currently competing for the 2026 returner job (he didn't specify if these are punts or kicks):
Truthfully, it's a little surprising to hear that this is even a battle, as Kenneth Williams came to MSU with a lot of hype as a returner. However, they could be thinking of him as the primary punt returner, while kicks would be returned by one of the three players above, potentailly.
