To say that the future of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program is hazy would be an understatement. After one of the most disappointing seasons in recent history, Mark Pope enters his third season on the hot seat, and the program is losing its status as a top destination. Fans worry that Kentucky will become the latest school to go from elite to afterthought, like Indiana and Syracuse before them.
The Wildcats need a big season, but so far, the offseason hasn't progressed like Big Blue Nation had hoped. They missed out on every top recruit they targets, including Tyran Stokes, who seemed like a lock at one point. In addition, the transfer portal additions have been underwhelming overall, with talented, but unproven players being brought in.
However, there is still some hope. There are three major decisions pending that will greatly affect the 2026-27 season, and Mark Pope's future as coach.
Malachi Moreno decided to go through the NBA draft process, but most people thought he would be back in Lexington next year. However, his stock has risen, and he has flown up mock drafts into a potential first round pick. If he stays in the draft, Kentucky will have a huge hole at the center position.
The best remaining player in the transfer portal is Milan Momcilovic, a deadly shooter who is a perfect fit for Pope's offense. He is also going through the draft process, and will have multiple suitors if he returns to college. He would be a huge get for Kentucky, and the star player they need.
Ryan Hampton is currently the No. 5 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class. He is considering reclassifying to 2026, though, and Kentucky is a contender. If they don't land Momcilovic, they could spend big for Hampton.
If Pope could get two of these three into Lexington next year, it would be big. It would give him a team capable of competing, and saving his job while showing Kentucky is still a top program. If he manages to miss on all three, it will be more damage to their reputation, and bring more ire from fans towards Pope.
