BIRMINGHAM — Thompson football got off to a slow start with field goals on its first two drives before awakening in route to a second straight AHSAA Class 7A title.
The Warriors ran away in the second quarter, scoring touchdowns on four straight drives to build a 31-point halftime lead on their way to a 48-10 win over Opelika at the AHSAA Super 7 at Protective Stadium on Wednesday.
The Warriors were led by Class of 2027 Alabama commit Trent Seaborn, who was 16 of 27 for 259 yards and three touchdowns. KJ Jackson added a second-quarter rushing touchdown. Three-star receiver Pryce Lewis had five catches for 112 yards and two scores.
Opelika struggled to get any offense going with just 26 total yards in the first half. They managed a field goal on their final drive, which was sprung by a long kick return. Opelika had 115 yards in the game and was hampered by three turnovers that Thompson turned into 21 points.
It is the sixth title in seven years for Thompson, all under coach Mark Freeman. It gives him his 12th state title across stops at Bessemer Academy (four AISA titles), Spanish Fort (two AHSAA titles) and Gulf Shores. He holds the most state titles in the history of Alabama.
