On Thursday morning, Harry Higgs teed off in the first group of the U.S. Open at 6:35 a.m., so forgive him if his brain synapses weren't firing at full speed when he hopped out of bed and got dressed in the dark.

Higgs made a mistake a journeyman pro shouldn't really make — unless he's on LIV, which Higgs is not — and wore shorts to Shinnecock Hills for the first round.

Pros can wear shorts during practice rounds but not during play. It's unclear what was foggier — the sky above Shinnecock, which was so soupy it led to a two-hour weather delay or Higgs's mind. It wasn't until he was in the locker room that he made this realization.

What did he do? He traded his shorts for the pair of pants being worn by Anthony Naylor, a longtime vet on the pro circuit who works for the Darrell Survey and is of a similar build and usually nattily dressed.

Higgs headed to the range to warm up in Naylor's wool pants while Harry's wife high-tailed it to the course with a pair of pants and he was able to slip into his own threads, but for a little while at the 126th U.S. Open, he was playing in his national championship in another man's pants.

It worked out just fine as Higgs fired a 71 and was in the top 30 at the end of the first round. His tee time on Friday is slated for 12:45 p.m. and we're assuming he'll come with the proper attire.
