The No. 26 pick is a curious area for the Los Angeles Rams. They’re a team without a clear position of need, meaning they could draft almost any position without many issues.

However, Pro Football Focus’ Dalton Wasserman writes that one surprise pick the Rams could make at No. 26 would be Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. This move would be shocking because of the Rams’ current roster, but not a bad pick considering the caliber of playing L.A. would add to their young and talented defensive front.

“While the Rams boast Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, they lack proven depth off the edge beyond him and Byron Young. James Pearce Jr. would be a strong fit as an explosive stand-up rusher, having tallied 107 pressures and 21 sacks over the past two seasons," Wasserman wrote. "Adding Pearce would give Los Angeles another dynamic piece to bolster its already ascending defensive front.”

Not only is Pearce productive, but he is an ideal size at edge rusher with his 6-foot-5 and 243-pound frame. Pearce’s 4.57 40-yard dash time also led all defensive ends by .10 seconds and his 1.56-second 10-second split also finished No. 1 in his position group.

But, as Wasserman alluded to, the Rams don’t need Pearce. Verse and Young are the team’s edge rushers and Braden Fiske was a great defensive end in 2024. Pearce would be a rotational player at most in this defense, which isn’t a bad thing, but not necessarily something a team wants to spend a top-30 pick on with other areas that could be addressed.

Team’s love depth at pass rusher, though, so the potential to add another piece of defensive firepower cannot be discounted. But, it would be a surprise given the Rams' other needs at cornerback, inside linebacker and tight end. The Rams could also just as easily add more edge rushers later in the draft rather than use their first-round pick on one.
