Cristiano Ronaldo is objectively one of the best soccer players to ever play the game. But time catches up with everyone, and it takes selflessness to be effective as a 41-year-old at his sixth World Cup.
That's a quality that Ronaldo doesn't possess, and one of the sport's greats noticed it in real time.
After heavily favored Portugal played DR Congo to a 1-1 draw in Houston on Wednesday, former French superstar Thierry Henry broke down what he saw from Ronaldo in the lackluster performance. Simply put, Ronaldo was a player who watched Lionel Messi's hat trick the night before and wanted to get on the score sheet for himself.
He did that at the detriment of Portugal, and it showed with the runs Ronaldo made in key situations.
Henry said in the Fox postgame:
He then pointed out how Ronaldo made decisions that crowded defenders in the area of teammates rather than making runs to create space for Bruno Fernandes.
This holds weight coming from a legend like Henry. But as long as Portugal is beholden to a 41-year-old megastar chasing his own stats, it's hard to imagine Portugal succeeding at this World Cup. Henry only needed one game to see that.

"One thing that's important, people, please at home, the team needs to score. Not YOU needs to score. ... Because HE wants to score, he goes in the path of the back pass, you see both players and it's easier for you to defend. And that's my thing: The team needs to score. Not you. "
