Syracuse football training camp opened this week, and Syracuse Roundtable was at the Ensley Athletic Center on Friday. This August, Roundtable will continue to bring you coverage from practices leading up to the 2026 opening game, Sept. 5 at home against New Hampshire.
What were some of the observations from practice on Aug. 7?
Quarterback Steve Angeli was in uniform and joined his teammates Friday afternoon at practice. After he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 4 last season against Clemson, it was encouraging to see Angeli participate in drills. Angeli did not play in Syracuse's annual spring game in April, but he did participate in spring practices.
It is very likely that Angeli, like almost all quarterbacks during the preseason, will not face contact during any practices leading up to the New Hampshire game.

The initial start of practice began outside with players stretching and warming up. After the initial stretch period, players sprinted off the field. A cloudy Central New York afternoon eventually led to rain and thunder forcing the practice to shift from outside to inside.

Entering his third season as the head coach of the Orange, Fran Brown has continued to keep his energy high during practice. During warm-ups, Brown could be heard leading chants, including a spirited "C-U-S-E," before concluding warmups and players breaking off into drills.
During a drill that practiced special teams coverage, Brown continued to emotionally motivate his players to bring energy and aggression. Brown is an easy presence to find on the field, with his instructions to players along with his motivating tactics continuing to raise the energy level during skill development.
Following the practice, defensive coordinator Vince Kehres, defensive back Chris Peal and linebacker Antoine Deslauriers all spoke to the media. Find out what each available member of the Orange said this weekend on Syracuse Roundtable.
The Orange have two closed practices and an off day scheduled over the course of the next four days. Roundtable's on-scene coverage will continue next Wednesday, with practice scheduled to take place again at the Ensley Center.
Syracuse football has 17 more scheduled practices during the remainder of August.
Syracuse's first regular-season game is Sept. 5 inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Kickoff is set for noon ET.
Atlantic Coast Conference play begins the following week when Cal visits Syracuse on Sept. 12. The Orange are on the road with a quick-turnaround game at Pitt on Sept. 17.
