What a difference one year makes for Commanders fans.

One year ago, word leaked that the Commanders had organized a group meeting of prospective draft picks at a local Top Golf in Ashburn. Oh, the ridicule heaped down on Washington. They had again shown they were not a wise organization; they were made out to be foolish for such an exercise.

Commanders fans will recall the attention the team received last year when they gathered prospective quarterbacks Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy, and Michael Penix Jr., in addition to other players they were considering drafting.

UNC quarterback Drake Maye was quoted as expressing how much he enjoyed the gathering and that he had the best golf swing of the group. Maye elaborated, saying it was one of the coolest visits he had been on (NFL Teams). Maye also offered that Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy had been hitting well, too.

Well, immediately, more than a few began to express how the Commanders had blown this opportunity because they should not have taken players to hit golf balls. GM Adam Peters had ruined whatever relationship they had built with Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Then came reports that Daniels and his agent had been led to believe it was to be a one-on-one visit. What were the Commanders thinking?!

But think back to one year ago. The Commanders were coming off a miserably embarrassing season, winning only four of 17 games. Much of the fan base was excited Ron Rivera had been fired, but they were then upset when Dan Quinn was named the head coach. Washington was said to be getting the guy no one else would hire, the guy who blew a 25-point lead in a Super Bowl.

How much this influenced the public response will never be admitted now. It may not even be realized; however, the context of the situation was that the Commanders had been horrible, and now again, it was messy drama.

Because Maye had voiced that it was cool and he thoroughly enjoyed it, a growing number proclaimed Maye to be the choice of the Commanders. Daniels' agent was not pleased with the visit for his client. But the Commanders didn't select Maye. They instead selected Daniels with the second overall selection in the 2024 draft, and we all know how well Daniels played for the Burgundy and Gold last year.

A year later, on April 15, 2025, the Commanders have again conducted a Top Golfnight for prospective draft choices. Apparently, the Las Vegas Raiders thought the Commanders' Top Golf night in 2024 was a good idea, as Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty has conveyed that the Raiders conducted their own Top Golf night this year for their prospective draft choices.

For those wondering, yes, the Commanders did go back to Topgolf for their group visit with 20 or so prospects this evening, per source.

Despite the outside reaction to their joint QB visit to Topgolf ahead of last year’s draft, Adam Peters and Dan Quinn found it beneficial…

Yes, a simple night of fun and interacting was turned into much more drama by the fan base and some in the sports media covering the Commanders. But actually, it was Daniels' agent who lit the first match, resulting in many inaccurately responding to the Top Golf Night.

Well, regardless of who had the best swing, the Commanders did not select Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy. They made the right choice in going with Jayden Daniels, and Commanders Wire hopes the Commanders will make some good choices again this year, despite the golf swings of their prospective players.
