Variety reports that M. Night Shyamalan's next project will be "The Woods," a mystery thriller he will write and direct, to star Kirsten Dunst, Joaquin Phoenix, and Ashton Kutcher. Filming will begin in Pennsylvannia in October for a summer 2004 release. The eventual film will be distributed by Touchstone Pictures.

"The Woods" tells the story of a small community in 1897 who finds that mythical creatures resides in the woods surrounding them.

I'm already intrigued...Phoenix is a great actor...anything by M. Night is worth seeing.

Update:

Dunst was only in negotiations and has decided to take a break rather than do this film. She's in Spidey 2, Wimbledon, and then Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown.

Replacing Dunst in Woods will be newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard most notable for being the daughter of Oscar-winning director Ron Howard. The younger Howard has spent most of her time on the stage where she's honed her acting skills. Shyamalan met with the actress earlier this week and approved.
