Game of the Day

The first four games of the season didn’t go the way the Prout softball team wanted them to go.

But now the Crusaders are showing what they learned from their rocky start.

Prout’s offense got hot early, the team battled through some minor mid-game adversity and then showed its grit in the final inning as Lucy Kaiser induced a bases-loaded groundout to close out the 6-5 win over St. Raphael for the team’s third win in four games.

The day didn’t start great for the Crusaders when Saints’ freshman Noelle Welch hit the third pitch of the game over the center field fence for a home run.

But after opening the season with a 1-3 record, Prout knows a thing or two about overcoming rocky starts. The Crusaders came out swinging in the bottom half and Kaiser drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly and Mia Boyajian executed a perfect squeeze bunt to bring in Kelsea Flaherty for the 2-1 lead.

Prout carried the momentum into the second, adding to the lead when Rachel Dias scored on a passed ball and Emma Manzo ripped an RBI double before scoring on a groundout by Flaherty to make it 5-1.

St. Raphael – which plays in Division II - cut the deficit in half on an RBI groundout by Sophie Roman and an RBI triple off the bat of Emma Martin.

With the score still at 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth, a Prout rally ended when Dias – a slap hitter – was ruled out after being hit by her own batted ball while in fair territory. Coach David Lustberg argued the call with the umpire and after it seemed the conversation ended, sat down on the bucket near the Prout dugout and had a few more words, earning himself an ejection from the game.

The Crusaders showed some support for their coach in the bottom of the sixth, getting a run off a ball hit by Manzo.

Kaiser – who came on in relief of starter Lily Sheehan – looked to be in control after getting the first two batters out, but then thing went haywire. Two walks and an error loaded the bases, then a walk and hit by pitch had St. Raphael down 6-5.

With the tying run on third, Kaiser bore down and got a groundout back to the circle. She knocked the ball down, thought about flipping it home before firing to first to end the game.

Manzo led the Prout offense, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Four other players scored runs in the game for the Crusaders and three others had a single RBI.

Welch was the big swinger for St. Raphael, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Sousa scored two runs and pitched a complete game, giving up just two hits and while she gave up six runs, only three were earned. Sousa also finished with seven strikeouts.

Westerly 5, Narragansett 1

Bulldogs starter Tom Fiore struck out nine, allowing just one hit and one walk over five innings and the Westerly bats pounded out 10 hits to sink the Mariners in this cross-division clash.

Grayson Simmons and Michael Poole each had two hits for Division I Westerly, with Simmons going 2-3 with 3 RBIs.

Jackson Hohl had Division II Narragansett's lone hit on the day and Zayden Kent took the loss, allowing 4 runs while striking out 4 over 4 innings.

Cranston East 13, Prout 12

The Crusaders whittled away at the Thunderbolts' 12-run lead, but Cranston East held on when it mattered most to seal the win.

Six East batters drove in a pair of runs – Harrison Fisher, Antonio Defusco, Ethan Torres, Joshua Gillen, Tyler Chisolm and Anthony Pimentel – with many of them recording a two-hit game.

But Prout - which plays in Division II - would not go quietly, with the Crusaders putting together an 11-run fourth inning on six hits, keyed by run-scoring doubles by Lucas Sheehan, Dylan Delgado and a triple by Joe Hennings.

The outburst brought Prout to within a run, and as soon as it looked like the script would flip, the Thunderbolts turned to reliever Jeu Leon, who tossed 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs with 6 strikeouts the rest of the way.

Hendricken 6, Cumberland 4

In a continuation of an April 14 game that was called due to darkness, the Hawks battled back from a 4-1 deficit and emerged with the victory.

East Lyme took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Cambi's single, then added another run in the second on an error.

West Warwick 8, Toll Gate 1

Offense was in full force for the Wizards and Mason Hunt made sure West Warwick didn't waste all those runs. Hunt scattered 7 hits and 1 run over 7.2 innings, with 7 strikeouts and just one walk.

The Wizards compiled nine hits, with Jair Blanco leading with way – 2-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. After the Titans tied the game in the third inning thanks to a Jonah LaFauci RBI double, Blanco reached base with a double to center in the bottom half of the frame, Hunt helped his cause with a double of his own to score Blanco and Jack Proulx drove him home with a single.

Joe Rivera had a pair of hits for West Warwick, and the Wizards drew 7 walks on the afternoon. Catcher Nick Andruchow was 1-2 with a pair of stolen bases.

East Greenwich 5, Pilgrim 3

Henry Kearns, the No. 3 hitter, went 2-for-3 and drove in 3 runs batted in, Matt Wellington was 3-for-3 with 2 stolen bases, and Sam Shekon collected two hits and the D-I Patriots prevailed over the D-II Avengers.

Pilgrim stole four bases in the game. Anders Nelson and Val Martin each had a hit and an RBI for EG. Keans put Pilgrim on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first but an RBI single by Martin and a sac fly by Nelson put East Greenwich in the lead in the third. Kearns then doubled to tie it in the Pats' third. Pilgrim took the lead in the fifth on Wellington's single.

La Salle 1, St. Anthony’s 0

Hailey Vigneau threw a three-hitter and Lily Roumelis brought home the only run with one big wing as the Rams took down St. Anthony’s, 1-0.

Up against a perennial power in New York’s Catholic High School Athletic Association, La Salle showed Rhode Island can play a little softball as well.

Vigneau had her stuff working early, keeping St. Anthony’s hitters off balance all day and letting her defense make plays behind her. Vigneau gave up only three hits in seven innings of work, walking four and striking out five.

La Salle’s offense was stymied by St. Anthony senior ace Melissa Gordon, who’s headed to pitch for Iona College after graduation. After seeing the top of their order go down 1-2-3 for the first time in a long time, Roumelis opened the second inning by hitting the second pitch out of the yard to left field for the 1-0 lead.

Phoenyx Silva had the only other hit for the Rams and drew a walk.

North Kingstown 11, Portsmouth 7

The Skippers were handed extra outs in the first inning and took advantage and freshman Amelia Fries’ home run helped put the game out of reach in an 11-7 win over the Patriots.

Four first-inning errors by Portsmouth helped North Kingstown start out on the right foot, scoring five runs with RBI singles by Lillian Smith, Leah Ruppert and Gianna Amedeo.

The Patriots got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a Barbara Rainey home run, but the Fries’ two-run homer put the Skippers on top 8-1. Portsmouth trailed 11-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth and made thing interesting with six runs, but Amedeo came in to pitch for NK and finished things off cleanly.

Fries finished the game 2-for-4 with the home run, two RBI and two runs. Mia D’Andrea went 2-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs. RosemarieHayward, Ella Mezzanotte and Ruppert scored two runs apiece and Smith had two RBI. Mezzanotte picked up the win in the start with Amedeo earning the save.

Rainey finished her afternoon 2-for-4 with the home run, two RBI and two runs. Mia Ruggieiri also drove home a pair of runs in the loss.

East Providence 3, Ponaganset 2

After seeing the Chieftains score the first two runs of the game in the top of the sixth, the Townies came up clutch in the bottom half thanks to a big hit by Emma Boisseau and heads-up baserunning by Caroline Welch to pull out the 3-2 win.

The first five innings of the game were dominated by the starting pitchers as East Providence’s Cassie Dulude and Ponaganset’s Mattea Mello traded zeroes through five innings.

With two outs in the sixth, the Chieftains got some offense going. Jillian Baris and Claire Barrett hit back-to-back singles and All-Stater Maia Salvo walked to load the bases.

Mia Duncan worked a full count, then ripped a single to center field that scored Baris and Barrett for the 2-0 lead.

East Providence returned the favor in the bottom half. After a ground out and strikeout started the inning, Ella Grimely and Aubrey Bernard hit singles and Boisseau brought them both in with a single to center field. After a Trinity Provencher walk, Boisseau took third and was then pinch-ran for by Welch, who scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

Ponaganset tried to rally in the seventh and had runners on the corners with two outs, but Dulude induced a fly ball out to center field to end the game.

Dulude threw a complete game, giving up five hits and walking two while striking out five. Mello, a freshman, was equally impressive, throwing six innings and giving up four hits while striking out 11.

Cranston West 6, West Warwick 2

Ava Iannelli came up with the go-ahead RBI in the fifth and Emma Regine tacked on some insurance as the Falcons flew past the Wizards, 6-2.

West Warwick errors led to Cranston West’s two first-inning runs and the Wizards tied the game in the top of the fourth on a sac fly by Allie Iannotti and a single by Sarah Payan.

The Falcons went to work in the sixth and had runners on the corners with two outs when Iannelli burned a ball to right that scored Mia Crudale with the go-ahead run. After a walk, Regine stepped up nd hit a two-run single to left field to make it 5-2. A West Warwick error led to the final run that had Cranston West up 6-2.

Mia Sampaio closed the door on the game. The freshman came on in relief in the top of the fifth and allowed just one hit while striking out three to pick up the victory.

SOFTBALL- Division II

South Kingstown 17, BNS 7

Big hits by Abigail O’Rourke and Bianca Harding highlights a six-run fourth inning that helped the Rebels flip the scoreboard for good in a 17-7 win over the Broncos.

A Tessa O’Sullivan single turned into a run after an BNS error and two batters later, O’Rourke ripped a three-run double that put the Rebels ahead 5-4. Harding soon followed with an RBI double before Kathryn Silvia’s single capped the scoring and made it 7-4.

The Broncos got one back in the bottom half, O’Sullivan drove home a run – and later scored on a passed ball – and Abigail O’Connor walked with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 10-5. Cranston East 7, Davies 3

The Thunderbolts took advantage of what was given to them and Aniah Parke’s double helped seal up the 7-2 win over the Patriots.

After losing their first two games of the season earlier this week, things didn’t start great for Cranston East when Davies scored in the top half of the first. In the bottom half, Nevaeh Fatorma opened with a single, stole two bases and then scored on a Patriots’ error. The Thunderbolts added two more on an error later in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Davies cut the deficit in half in the third, but in the bottom of the fourth Cranston East gave itself some breathing room. Lexi Montalban came through with a two-run single and Parke’s RBI double put the Thunderbolts ahead 6-3.

Montalban made sure the lead stuck. The sophomore threw a complete game, striking out eight while giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Fatorma and Gianna Tocci scored a pair of runs for Cranston East and Montalban finished with two RBI.

Tiana Hernandez had two hits in the loss for Davies.

After opening the game with six runs, the Tigers closed it down with six more in the fourth to earn the mercy-rule shortened 13-1 win over the Huskies.

Lia Doster opened the bottom of the first with a double and it was a sign of things to come for Tiverton. Carlie Martin drove in the first run with a sac fly and Sadie Pickering followed with a two-run single. Mt. Hope got a second out on the board, but it only made the Tigers stronger as Kelsey Conway ripped a two-run single and an error led to a run that made it 6-0.

Tiverton added a run in the second and the Huskies came up with one of their own in the third on an RBI double by Sofia Haberman, but the Tigers put the game away with six in the fourth inning. Doster’s two-run single made it a 12-run game, giving Tiverton a walk-off win.
