The United States men's hockey team has been the source of some controversy this week involving their celebratory phone call with President Donald Trump after winning the gold.

As members of the U.S. men's team attend Tuesday's State of the Union, you may hear about it. What happened, exactly? Well, the moment in question came after the team won the gold on Sunday over Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.

FBI director Kash Patel joined in the locker room after the gold win to celebrate with the team. President Trump reached out to the hockey team via Patel's phone to congratulate them on the victory and invite them to the State of the Union address and White House.

During the conversation, Trump made a wisecrack that the White House is "going to have to bring the women's team," which elicited a mix of cheers and laughs from the men's team.

Trump followed that up with his thought on what would happen if he didn't invite the gold-winning U.S. women's team: "I do believe I probably would be impeached, okay?" Some laughter followed that comment.

Since that video went viral, some have felt that some members of men's team failed to uphold their women counterparts, who went just as far as they did in the Winter Olympics, by laughing at Trump's comments.

U.S. men's hockey standouts like Jack Hughes and Quinn Hughes have responded to the video, offering praise for the women's team.

Trump has not yet responded to his viral comments, but he could during his State of the Union address.
