OREGON, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Oregon High School’s football program has enjoyed three straight playoff seasons. The Hawks have been consistent. They’ve had some outstanding players, and they have played in some of the most exciting down-to-the-wire games in the Big Northern Conference.

The Hawks should be very entertaining again this year.

The last three teams here have set the tone for winning football in Oregon. These players believe they can carry it forward.

“Our team is pretty good this year,” said receiver/linebacker Ethan Peeling. “I think we’re better than last year based off what we came back with, a lot of starters coming back.”

The Hawks should have one of the BNC’s most dynamic weapons in new starting quarterback Jakobi Donagen. He’s a dual-threat guy.

“We’re going to try to get him out in open space, still running the ball, but he’s a big strong kid. He can run between the tackles too,” said head coach Broc Kundert. “He’s actually got a really strong arm.”

“He’s amazing! Like, he can sling it probably 50, 40 yards,” said Peeling of Donagen.

Senior running back Jayden Berry will be another offensive weapon for the Hawks with his excellent speed. He’ll also use that speed at safety on defense.

Senior Jakob Moser will play fullback. He’s also a three-year starter at linebacker. The defense revolves around him.

“Defensively, he’s kind of our leader out there,” said Kundert.

Moser is just one part of a linebacking unit that could be outstanding. Wrestling standouts Levi Bennett and Nelson Benesch also play there. They’re back after sitting out football last year.

“We had two middle linebackers last year. Now, we’ll be running stack. Three middle linebackers. They’re probably the biggest thing,” said Moser of Oregon’s strength.

As for the lines, the Hawks seem to have those covered too. Dawson Alcala is back. He was second team all-conference on the offensive line last year, and so was senior Zayden Vandesand. Zandyr Withers also brings good size to the defensive front and at tight end. Kai Barcai also returns with experience on the offensive line. Juniors Cole Suter and Yovanni Carreno will also start on the offensive front.

Ethan Peeling was a second team all-conference defensive back last year. He’ll move to linebacker this year. He will also be another guy with speed on offense.

“Ethan Peeling has been playing a little bit of like running back/slot receiver for us,” said Kundert. Kind of a motion jet guy. He’s got really good speed.”
