An NHL general manager may have an equal chance of finding a leprechaun or unicorn as a 20-goal scorer when the NHL market for unrestricted free agents opens July 1.
The Toronto Maple Leafs sign-and-trade deal to acquire defenseman Darren Raddysh reduced the number of potential 20-goal UFA from eight to seven. The list includes Alex Tuch, Bobby McMann, Vladimir Tarasenko, Viktor Arvidsson, Alex Mantha, Jack Roslovic and Ovechkin.
Maybe Ovechkin shouldn’t be in the list because it’s hard to believe he would play anywhere but Washington.
The list is important to Detroit GM Steve Yzerman because he would like to sign one of those to play in Detroit’s top six forward group. If you believe neither Mantha nor Tarasenko want to return to Detroit, it leaves an even shorter list.
The Red Wings presumably have interest in McMann because a center is a priority. McMann is fast and physical and both of those qualities could help the Red Wings.
The only other center is Roslovic. He is a middle six center who can skate and be an effective faceoff guy (53%). He has scored 20 or more goals in each of the past two seasons. Some projections have the Red Wings making a pitch for him.
In Case You Missed It
Forward Mason Appleton was the player the Red Wings hoped he would be.
A former Detroit defenseman believes the Oilers are “idiots” for wanting Mike Babcock.
Right wing Michael Brandsegg-Nygard may be able to provide both goals and guts to the Detroit squad.
Red Wings Extra
The hockey world, particularly Red Wings fans, are mourning the death of Paul Kukla, the founder of Kukla’s Korner. He founded the site in 2004-05 with the idea of creating a new place for the hockey community to discuss the NHL. Paul was viewed as a pioneer in the blogger community. .
There is an understanding in the NHL community this summer that’s challenging for Detroit fans to remain optimistic.
Random thought: has to be hard to be a Red Wings fan right now.
MTL, TB, BUF are wagons. OTT and BOS playoff teams. FLA massive bounce-back. TOR was supposed to be a bottom dweller but gets No. 1 pick + signs top UFA D-man.
