After dropping the series to the Pirates, the Astros need to bounce back. Tonight they open a series against the Oakland Athletics at Daikin Park at 7:10 PM, continuing their homestand.
The Athletics have been surprisingly competitive this season despite all of the organizational chaos surrounding the team. They have a young exciting offense that can put up runs, so this is not a free win for the Astros.
Their last series in April was a high-scoring one, but the Athletics eventually took the series, winning the first and third games, 11-4, 11-0, and 12-10. This homestand is exactly the kind of opportunity Houston needs to start climbing the standings, but they are going to have to earn it.
Peter Lambert takes the mound tonight and he has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the season. He signed as a minor league free agent and nobody expected much, but he has delivered. His current record is 4-4 with a 3.77 ERA and he has given the Astros length and consistency when they needed it most, per MLB. He will need to be sharp tonight against an Athletics lineup that can do damage in a hurry.
The Astros are 28-36 and need to start seriously climbing. The AL West is still very much in play. June is the month to make a move with a favorable schedule and every series win matters right now. Athletics, Angels, Royals, Tigers, Guardians all on the schedule this month.
The Astros showed Wednesday they can compete with anyone and come back from anything. Now they need to take care of business against the teams they should beat. Tonight is a good place to start.
