Professional baseball players have been playing the game long enough that they know with near certainty what a home run feels like off the bat. It was clearly one of those feelings for Astros outfielder Taylor Trammell.
The problem: He didn't hit a home run, and he was the literal last person in the stadium to realize it.
During the fourth inning of Monday's game in Houston, Trammell got a hold of a 92 mph four-seam fastball from Blue Jays starter Shane Bieber. And let's be honest — Trammell was right to think he crushed the ball. It was 110 mph off the bat. It traveled 419 feet, and it would have been a home run in 25 ballparks.
He just happened to be playing in one of those five ballparks where the ball stayed in the yard.
Now, it would have been one thing for Trammell to admire the ball or do a bat flip on an eventual fly out. It's still embarrassing, but it does happen from time to time.
Trammell, though, was so in the zone over his definite home run that he did a complete trot around the bases. It wasn't until he crossed home plate where Yainer Diaz broke the news to him. It was a fly out.
Did the lack of music or fireworks not register with Trammell? Let's hope he was able to laugh the blunder off because that was a rough watch.
