For a time Monday, it looked as if Louisville might have gotten Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic, but as it turns out, he chose Kentucky later in the evening.
He’s a great three-point shooter, but we’re not sure the rest of his game is that polished. Nonetheless, it’s a big get for Mark Pope and the Wildcats, and Pope knows what to do with a three-point shooter. Will it hurt Louisville?
Some. Not as much as it would have hurt Kentucky to lose out, though.
And we’d have been fine with Louisville getting him. Why?
Because we don’t want Duke to be the East Coast version of Gonzaga in the WCC. We want lots of very good teams in the ACC. That almost certainly means that Duke won’t be as dominant in the regular season as it has been for a while, but the Blue Devils will benefit from the increased competition, particularly in March.
We’re not going to get into every team right now, but just look at the rosters for Louisville, UNC, and Virginia.
Also, keep in mind that Miami and Clemson will be highly competitive, and that in his first season, Florida State’s Luke Loucks showed some real coaching chops. SMU should continue to be a challenge as well.
We’ll see how everyone else does as the season advances, but from early June, the ACC looks vastly improved.
