The San Francisco 49ers are bringing tight end Jake Tonges back on a two-year contract for $8 million. It’s a deal that includes $5.5 million in guaranteed money, according to Tom Pelissero. The deal comes ahead of the restricted free agent deadline.
Tonges was a key contributor and came through for the 49ers when they needed an option at tight end with George Kittle sidelined. Tonges caught 34 of his 46 targets, including five touchdowns.
With Kittle recovering from an Achilles tear, the Niners may rely more on Tonges early in the season. The other tight end on the roster is Luke Farrell. Between the three, largely because of Kittle’s contract, the 49ers are in the top three of spending at tight end.
The 49ers placed a tender on Sam Okuayinonu. It’s a one-year deal for $3.54 million for Sam O, per The Athletic’s Matt Barrows.
Okuayinonu joins Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, Bryce Huff, and Keion White in the edge rushing room.
Based on the early moves in free agency, the 49ers are positioning themselves in a position where they could go secondary early in the NFL Draft.
