A quick glance at the latest polls doesn’t cause any concern for Texas softball, right?
After dropping two of their three games against Tennessee this past weekend for their first series loss in the SEC, the Longhorns (39-5, 11-4) fell from No. 1 to No. 3 in both the ESPN/USA Today and National Fastpitch Coaches Association polls. They’re just a game behind first-place and top-ranked Texas A&M in a crowded SEC race, which is unquestionably the most grueling conference in the nation, with 13 of the top 23 teams in the NCAA RPI rankings.

Texas apparently can’t afford many more losses, based on its current NCAA RPI position behind, in order, Texas A&M, Florida, South Carolina, Florida State, Arkansas, UCLA and LSU.
That makes this week's series against LSU (35-8, 8-7) especially important. The Tigers just gave up 25 runs in three games while getting swept by the Aggies this past weekend, and LSU — then ranked No. 6 in the country — needs to quickly right the ship if they hope to cling to their No. 7 RPI ranking. LSU this week is ranked No. 9 in both national polls.
