A day after Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens left the series opener early in a strategic move by coach Karen Weekly, the Vol ace handcuffed the Texas softball lineup in a 3-1 win that evened the SEC series at 1-1.
The teams will face off in a third and final game Sunday at noon at McCombs Field in Austin.
The No. 1 Longhorns (39-4, 11-3 SEC) had just four hits as Pickens picked up the complete-game win for No. 5 Tennessee (33-9, 8-6). They scored their lone run in the fourth inning when Katie Cimusz drove in Joley Mitchell with a single, and their only other threat was negated by a replay overturn in fifth inning.

In the bottom half of the frame, Kayden Henry drew a five-pitch walk with one out and promptly stole second base. She hustled to third on the subsequent throwing error by the Tennessee catcher, but Weekly challenged Henry’s timing of leaving first base. Henry was ruled out, and two pitches later, Mia Scott sent a 2-1 pitch through the left side for a two-out single that would have scored Henry and tied the game had she not left first base too soon.
The Henry and Scott sequence was the final offensive threat for the Longhorns as Pickens (16-4) went on to retire the next seven consecutive Texas batters.
Texas coach Mike White chose to rest Teagan Kavan after his ace threw a complete-game shutout in the Longhorns’ 3-0 win in game one Friday. Mac Morgan (7-2) got the start for Texas and gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, and reliever Citlaly Gutierrez worked 4.1 innings and didn’t allow a run until the seventh.
“It was really just a game of inches,” White said. “You know, Mac made one mistake the whole afternoon, and then we nearly had a runner on third with one out there in the fifth looking to tie the game, but Kayden got called for leaving first base early, so that really changed the wave of momentum in their favor. We made some outstanding plays throughout the game. We turned a couple double plays and made some nice catches, so we did do some good things today that we want to build on (for Sunday).”
