Texas basketball got some big news Friday. Literally.

Matas Vokietaitis, a 7-foot sophomore who blossomed into one of the top big men in the SEC in his first season as a Longhorn, will return to Texas next year, according to report from Jonathan Giovny of Draft Express.

Vokietaitis averaged 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds this past season while starting all 36 games, and he should serve as a centerpiece for Texas coach Sean Miller’s squad in 2026-27.

The return of Vokietaitis is the first good news Miller has gotten since the Longhorns ended the season with a 79-77 loss to Purdue March 26 in the Sweet 16. Guards Tramon Mark, Chendall Weaver and Jordan Pope have used up their eligibility, and forward Dailyn Swain declared for the NBA draft after an All-SEC junior season. Miller also lost three players to the transfer portal on Thursday, including starting forward Cam Heide, reserve forward Nic Codie and reserve guard Simeon Wilcher.

The loss of seven of the eight players in the Longhorns’ NCAA Tournament rotation leaves plenty of holes to fill. Miller has yet to sign anyone in the transfer portal.

Texas currently has five frontcourt players expected on its roster for next season: Vokietaitis, rising sophomore Declan Duru, rising redshirt freshmen John Clark and Lewis Obiorah, and incoming freshman Coleman Elkins.

Miller will welcome in a four-player recruiting class that also includes a McDonald's All-American guard in 6-foot-5-inch Austin Goosby as well as a pair of shooting guards in Bo Ogden and Joe Sterling. Ogden, the son of Texas general manager Chris Ogden, recently earned the All-CenTex player of the year award from the Austin American-Statesman after leading Westlake High School to the state tournament.
