Texas A&M's 2026 safety rotation should be considered the top unit in the SEC, with Marcus Ratcliffe and Dalton Brooks returning for their senior season, while the addition of Colorado transfer defensive back Tawfiq Byard provides third-year coach Mike Elko and first-year defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill with versatility as both a safety and hybrid linebacker.
After transferring from San Diego State two seasons ago, Marcus Ratcliffe's size, length, and physicality immediately stood out, and given Mike Elko's development background, especially at safety, Ratcliffe's remaining weaknesses had nothing to do with his NFL traits but more about adding more size and strength in the weight room.
Last season, after recording 66 tackles, three tackles for loss, and three pass deflections last season, Ratcliffe is on pace to lead the Aggies in tackles based on how he'll be used in the box, especially after star senior linebacker Daymion Sanford suffered a lower-body injury during the Maroon & White Game.
After earning a spot on the 2026 Lott Trophy Watchlist, Ratcliffe was named a Walter Camp Preseason All-American, earning his second Preseason All-American honor this summer. Given his importance to the defense, Ratcliffe will be depended on to lead the secondary throughout the season, especially with transfer linebacker Ray Coney making his debut this fall.
