It may be the offseason, but Texas A&M head basketball coach Bucky McMillan has been anything but “off” since the Aggies played their last game a month ago. After picking up a few critical transfers, headlined by star Kansas State shooting guard PJ Haggerty, McMillan has made progress with another potential player, this time a high school prospect.
Chase Richardson, a four-star recruit hailing from Friendswood, Texas, has narrowed his recruitment down to five teams: Nebraska, Notre Dame, Purdue, Virginia, and, of course, Texas A&M. The 6’1 point guard is ranked the 84th-best player in the 2027 class by 247Sports and projects to be a multi-year starter at the power-five level.
The Aggies are a wildcard in Richardson’s recruitment, as 247Sports does not have an offer from McMillan logged in their database, while On3 does not have the team listed as a potential interest at all. This possibly suggests that McMillan, in the midst of his busy transfer portal schedule, has made it a priority to target Richardson recently – and that his pitch to Richardson was effective.
Richardson is a steady point guard who commands the offense brilliantly by balancing his scoring, featuring a crafty driving game and smooth pull-up jumper, with his advanced feel for the game. While he is an elite scorer at the high school level, it’s everything else that catches the eye while watching his tape. He is a willing and able passer capable of both threading passes through the defense and making the simple play when available, and he generated quite a few steals sitting at the top of Friendswood’s 2-3 zone defense.
While we still have 18 months until Richardson suits up for his collegiate debut, it is clear that he would be an excellent fit on this Texas A&M squad. He is comfortable shooting in a wide variety of situations, thrives in transition/early offense both as a scorer and playmaker, and has the motor and instincts to wreak havoc on defense. These are the three requisite traits for McMillan’s three-ball heavy, high-tempo, pressing scheme.
