Texas A&M's three starting defensive linemen during the 2024 season have all been selected in the 2025 NFL draft. Shemar Stewart led the pack as the Cincinnati Bengals' 17th overall pick, followed by Nic Scourton (Carolina Panthers, 51st overall pick) and Shemar Turner (Chicago Bears, 62nd overall pick) going in the second round on Friday night.
On paper, Stewart's early selection was based entirely on his elite traits, as his 4.5 career sacks worried scouts. Still, the new Bengals defensive coordinator, Al Golden, should be able to iron out his technical issues and get him to reach his potential as a double-digit sack artist. Still, his potential may take some time to reach this level.
Nic Scourton's drop in the second round was mainly due to his lack of pass rush production during his final collegiate season with Texas A&M, recording 37 tackles, five sacks, and two pass deflections compared to his 10 sacks during his final season with Purdue in 2023.
However, he may have been playing too heavy and out of position. After dropping 30 pounds during his NFL Combine performance, the Bryan, Texas native looked much more fluid during his pass rush drills, leading to the Panthers' second-round selection.
With Carolina, Scourtin is an absolute steal from a value standpoint. It will immediately contribute next season, most likely as an outside linebacker behind veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, who signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Panthers last offseason.
Scourton's versatility will also come in handy, as he can play at any defensive end spot. He will join former Aggie defensive tackle Bobby Brown III and Texas A&M safety Demani Richardson, who are both slated to start next season. During his one season in College Station, Scourton earned an 80.1 defensive grade, a 74.4 run defense grade, and an 80.6 pass rush grade per Pro Football Focus.
