Texas A&M and Texas are already deep into a familiar tug‑of‑war for elite talent in the 2027 recruiting cycle, and the battle for the nation’s top five‑stars is shaping up to be one of the defining storylines of this class.
With speed‑driven, wide‑open offenses taking over the sport, securing true difference‑makers on defense has become non‑negotiable. Even as the transfer portal reshapes roster building, high‑end high school commits remain the backbone of any long‑term contender. So far, Texas A&M has treated the early cycle like a construction project., stacking five‑stars like Legos. The Aggies already hold three 5‑star commitments and sit firmly in the top group for several more.
But one of their biggest targets may be slipping away.
According to recent predictions from Rivals recruiting analysts Sam Spiegelman and Steve Wiltfong, the nation’s No. 1 cornerback, John Meredith, is now trending toward Texas. While nothing is official until signatures hit paper, all current indications point to the elite defensive back heading to Austin to begin his college career in burnt orange.
There’s still a long road between now and signing day, and momentum can flip quickly in modern recruiting. But for now, Texas A&M appears to be fighting from behind in the race for one of the premier defenders in the 2027 class but there are other options not far behind.
