While the season is over for the Houston Texans, any injury that occurred could linger into offseason workouts, thus hindering a player's performance ahead of 2026.

Both tight ends Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover suffered injuries in the divisional round loss to the New England Patriots and did not return to the game. Schultz, the Texans' No. 2 weapon, sustained a calf injury in the first quarter after posting the team's longest play from scrimmage, while Stover left in the third quarter with a knee injury.

Schultz might have been able to return to the conference championship, but Stover was expected to miss several weeks with a partially torn MCL. But now with the season in the rear-view, everything is fixated on the getting back to full speed for Week 1 of the 2026 season.

According to general manager Nick Caserio, both tight ends avoided serious injuries that could have cost them valuable months away from the team.

“Cade avoided serious injury,” Caserio said Wednesday at NRG Stadium during his end of the year press conference. “I think he’s going to be okay. Probably going to be ready for the offseason program. Probably not as bad as it looked. It looked pretty bad. I think he’s going to be okay."

Schultz, who enters the final year of his three-year, $33 million extension, looked like one of the league's more consistent tight ends as the security blanket for C.J. Stroud. After taking a step back in 2024, the 29-year-old regained his form, totaling a franchise record 82 passes for 777 yards and three touchdowns.

“Dalton will be okay,” Caserio said. “I don’t think it’s anything major. Overall, got pretty good production from that group. Dalton had a really good season. Broke the franchise record for career receptions by a tight end. A guy whose record he broke was a damn good player (Owen Daniels)."

The Texans could restructure Schultz's deal by adding a year to the contract, thus freeing up some cap space ahead of free agency. While the Texans need a secondary option at tight end following another injury-ridden season from Brevin Jordan and Stover, Schultz seems to be in the long-term plan for Houston's offense as the franchise enters a make-or-break season with Stroud.

Caserio said that part of the reason for the woeful play of Schultz was due to an injury. Now back at full speed, one could see a more stable option in the passing game."

"He’s not going to say anything and make an excuse but got really good production from them," Caserio said. "Dalton had really good year, very dependable, very instinctive and a very smart player.”

The Texans own the No. 28 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They enter the offseason with just under $3 million in cap space.
