In the NFL, the weeks leading up to training camp are usually a quiet period meant for vacationing players and front offices recharging their batteries. But for Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio and head coach DeMeco Ryans, the grind to optimize a championship-caliber roster never truly stops.

As first reported by the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander, the Texans have waived cornerback Ajani Carter and defensive end/linebacker Xavier Thomas from the reserve/injured list. Both defenders had been sidelined since May, with Carter recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. While casual fans might glance over July roster subtractions of an undrafted free agent and a futures-contract addition, these moves speak volumes about how the modern Texans operate.

The Reality of "What Have You Done for Me Lately?"

The NFL is a notoriously unsentimental business, and the departures of Carter and Thomas illustrate exactly why.

  • Ajani Carter: A local product out of the University of Houston, Carter had been grinding with the team since before the 2025 campaign. He scratched and clawed his way onto the field for two games last season, contributing entirely on special teams.
  • Xavier Thomas: A former 2024 fifth-round pick by the Cardinals, Thomas was signed to a futures contract in December 2025 to provide depth off the edge behind superstar Will Anderson Jr.

Both players possessed intriguing traits, but an injury sustained in May effectively locked them into a roster limbo. By releasing them now via an injury settlement, Houston clears two spots on their 90-man training camp roster.

It is a harsh reality when a team transforms from a rebuilding franchise into an AFC heavyweight, the margin for error disappears. In the past, a rebuilding Texans squad might have carried these young players on Injured Reserve for the year just to see what they had in 2027. Now? If you aren't healthy enough to compete for a dynamic depth spot in July, the train leaves without you.

Maximizing Roster Real Estate

Caserio is notorious for his hyper-fluid approach to the bottom of the roster. Every single spot on that 90-man sheet is treated like prime real estate.

By moving on from Carter and Thomas, the Texansare creating some roster flexibility. Rumors are already swirling about who might fill those vacancies. Will they pursue a proven, tenured veteran edge rusher to solidify the rotational depth behind Anderson and Danielle Hunter? Or perhaps add another veteran depth piece to the secondary?

Good teams fall in love with their depth pieces. Great teams constantly pressure their depth pieces to earn their keep.

The Texans are firmly and objectively in the "great teams" category now. The front office knows that a Super Bowl run can be derailed by poor depth in December, which means they need players who can provide immediate, healthy competition in July.

Looking Forward

For Carter and Thomas, this isn't necessarily the end of the road. Reports indicate that Carter is fully recovered and eligible to sign elsewhere, and it's not entirely impossible that either player returns to Houston's practice squad later in the year if they remain unsigned.

But for the Texans, this minor July shakeup is proof that DeMeco Ryans' culture is built on continuous competition. No roster spot is safe, no project is guaranteed a free pass, and the pursuit of a ring requires zero sentimentality. Training camp is only a few weeks away, and the Texans are already making it clear that they expect every single person uniform-ready and firing on all cylinders.
