CLEMSON — Former Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips has died, football coach Dabo Swinney announced on May 26.
Phillips had been in poor health in recent months, Swinney said.
"It's a very sad day because this day has come but it's a blessing because I know he's not suffering anymore," Swinney said at a media availiability.
Phillips served as Clemson's athletic director from 2002 before retiring in 2012. He has been integral to Clemson football's success, promoting Swinney to interim head coach in 2008 then fulltime in 2009 and hiring basketball coach Brad Brownell and men's soccer coach Mike Noonan in 2010.
Phillips' decision to hire Swinney to replace Tommy Bowden helped Clemson football experience immense success, winning two national championships and nine ACC titles.
"When I think about Terry Don Phillips, I really can't even begin to quantify his impact on me, personally, and Clemson," Swinney said.
Before Clemson, Phillips was the athletic director at Oklahoma State and held administrative roles at Liberty, Southwestern Louisiana and Arkansas.
