Terrible decision costs Fever win as Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell can only watch originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Indiana Fever came up just short on the road Thursday night at the Golden State Valkyries.
If the pivotal play for Aliyah Boston had gone differently, it may have set up Caitlin Clark or Kelsey Mitchell to change that outcome and turn a loss into a win.
The Fever trailed by two with the shot clock off as they fed Boston down low. She's having an amazing season, and it was a logical play call.
Things went awry, though, as the Valkyries' defense collapsed on Boston and made her work through multiple defenders instead of just one.

Rather than Boston finding a place to pass the basketball, she forced a wild shot, and it got nowhere near going in.
Meanwhile, Mitchell had cut to the near-side corner and gotten open at the last second, although Boston was already working to shoot at that point.
Clark was positioned at the top of the arc, and while her defender remained out there, she may have been an option.
The Fever had other shooters on the floor, too:

The toughest part of a play like this for Boston is the clock. With her back to the basket, she pretty much has to assume that there aren't many seconds left to work with, which can make a pass feel risky.
On the flip side, taking the shot she ended up with was not a good decision by Boston, anyway. Unless she draws a foul call, it pretty much ends the game.
In the end, Indiana had to leave the court with a loss, but it's not one of those endings that feels like they had done everything they could, either.
