Frank Emanuel was one of the last Vols to have been found on both sides of the ball.
A two-time state championship wrestler and All-State football player from Newport News, Va., Emanuel joined the Tennessee junior varsity squad before making his first varsity appearance under coach Jim McDonald in 1963. As Tennessee still employed the single-wing formation under McDonald, he briefly pulled double duty before settling in at linebacker.
Emanuel started his 1964 junior season — coach Doug Dickey’s first at Tennessee — and intercepted two passes for 42 return yards, earning second-team All-SEC honors from the Associated Press that year.
“Frank played football the way you liked to see it played,” Dickey said.
A captain his senior year, Emanuel snagged first-team All-SEC, consensus first-team All-America and Most Valuable Lineman honors.
With Emanuel anchoring the unit, Tennessee surrendered just 98 points during the 1965 season, a program low that has not been matched since. The Vols limited eight of their 11 opponents to seven points or fewer. In a matchup against Kentucky, Emanuel tallied 26 tackles. His Tennessee career wrapped with a 27-6 victory over Tulsa in the Bluebonnet Bowl, UT’s first bowl appearance in eight years.
Emanuel played in the NFL for five seasons, with stints in Miami (1966–1969) and New Orleans (1970).
In 1971, he transitioned into coaching, with tenures at five schools, including Tennessee. He also coached professionally with the Jacksonville Bulls of the USFL and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Emanuel was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame (2000) and College Football Hall of Fame (2005).
He is 83 years old.
