During the Tennessee Titans' post-draft press conference, president of football operations Chad Brinker was asked explicitly about wide receiver Treylon Burks and his fifth-year option. In response, he offered a less-than-enthusiastic response, saying, “Probably not.” On Thursday, the team made it official and declined the option, making Burks an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025 season.
This move comes as no surprise, as Burks has been a disappointment throughout his career in Nashville, and the guaranteed $15,493 million contract for 2026 is not palatable, especially for a player with 53 receptions for 699 yards and one touchdown in his career.
While the Titans have addressed their wide receiver room during free agency and the draft, they have not written off Burks by any means. They hope he can step up his game once he is cleared to return from the torn ACL he suffered during the 2024 season.
Head coach Brian Callahan was straightforward with his response when asked about Burks and his future with the Titans.
“He’s got to get healthy first. That’s the first part. He’s still working back. We’ll see where that ends up when he actually gets cleared,” Callahan said. “He’s got to come in and make some plays. I think he’s always had the ability, and he’s shown flashes of it, but we’re just looking for the consistency to show up when it’s time to show up.”
Tennessee is set for an entertaining battle at the wide receiver position throughout the summer and into training camp. After signing veteran free agents Van Jefferson and Tyler Lockett to join Calvin Ridley, the Titans made three significant additions over draft weekend, selecting Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor in the fourth round and signing one of Cam Ward's favorite targets, Xavier Restrepo, as an undrafted rookie free agent.
They also have 2024 camp darlings Bryce Oliver, Mason Kinsey, Colton Dowell, Jha’Quan Jackson, and James Proche competing for a roster spot, making Burks potentially an odd man out on the depth chart.
