July 29 (UPI) -- The NCAA suspended Tennessee senior linebacker Arion Carter for two games for accepting a $427 flight from an agent, the Volunteers said Wednesday.
Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said Carter signed with an agent and accepted the flight to "begin the draft process" after declaring for the draft in December.
Heupel said Carter later disengaged from the agent and "paid back the flight in full." The NCAA initially gave Carter a three-game suspension. That ban was reduced after a Volunteers appeal.
"Arion Carter represents everything that is right about college athletics, dedicating all four years of his career to the University of Tennessee," Heupel said. "His high character, loyalty and leadership within our program are unmatched."
Carter appeared in 31 games over the last three seasons. He totaled 76 combined tackles over 10 appearances last season.
"We disagree with the NCAA's ruling on punishing Arion with a multigame suspension this fall," Heupel said. "Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being. He will proudly graduate from Tennessee in public health with dean's list honors in August.
"Our team stands behind A.C. and his family, and we can't wait to be on the field with him during training camp this week."
The Volunteers will host Furman in their regular season opener Sept. 5 in Knoxville.
